MINUTES OF THE ORGANIZATION OF GLENWOOD CHURCH


On October the 25th, 1908, a meeting was held here for the purpose of organizing the Glenwood Baptist Church. The following ministers were present: Dr. T.M. Bailey, Rev. D.W. Hiott, Rev. D.I. Spearman, Rev. F.R. McLanahan.Dr. Bailey presided and R.C. Hurts acted as secretary. The following composed the presbytery: D.W. Hiott, Laban Mauldin, George Griffin, D.B. Cobb, J.N. Howard, W.F. Evatt, R.C. Burts, E.H. Barton, J.M. Jameson, EX. Hamilton, D.I. Spearman, A.H. McGee, C.E. Harris, H.R. Galloway, B.F. Galloway, Arthur Jones, W.A. Julian, W.L. Kennemore, F.R. McLanahan, Sam Edens, T.M. Bailey.

After the organization of the presbytery the following presented themselves- for membership:

Lizzie Hopkins (Porter), Lilly Stansell (Hogan) ,B.B. Hopkins, Maud Stewart (Edens),B.C. McClure, Ola Golden, A.C. Brookshire Hattie Golightly, Bessie Former, Elisle Jones, T.J. Johnson, D.B. Baynard, Mattison Spearman, Fannie Baynard, Martin Ellenburg, R. Perry Walker, F.B. Christopher, Gussie Walker, Sam Hornsby, J.B. Hood, John Rice , Lois Simmons, George Cobb, Addie Simmons, Delia Edens, E. Chandlers Taylor, Stella Edens (Christopher) , J.P. Golightly, Lilly Burdenshow, Bessie Davis (Mullinax), Mattie Smith (Snead), F.C. Powell, Velma Smith (McAdams), Curry McClure

Next in order was the reading of articles of faith by Dr. Bailey. These were adopted by the members by a unanimous vote. The church covenant was then read and adopted. The members were then recognized by the presbytery as a regularly-organized church, after which Dr. Bailey declared them duly organized in gospel order.

The hand of church fellowship was extended the new members by the presbytery. A motion was made and unanimously carried that the name "Glenwood Baptist Church" be adopted.

In conclusion, Dr. Bailey, in a very earnest and feeling way, made a few brief remarks to the members of the new church by way of instruction to them in the beginning of this work as church. Several others also made short talks. After the announcement that Rev. D.W. Hoitt would continue as their pastor for the remainder of the year at least, a collection of $3.20 was taken and the meeting adjourned.
